This exclusive and enchanting little hotel fully entails the charme of the ancient Sicilian courtyard house ('baglio'), a place which transpires tranquillity and inner peacefulness... Surrounded by a grove of tall pine trees and situated at a few hundred metres from the golden gate of the ancient town of Noto, this Borgo was founded by Benedictine monks at the end of 1400. Destroyed by an earthquake which stroke Noto in 1963, it was entirely reconstructed in 1700. The baglio is composed of a few stone prefab buildings with a central courtyard and some shady gardens fringed with fig, carob and age-old olive trees. In the garden, there is a beautiful swimming pool with an extraordinary view over the valley that opens up on the Mediterranean Sea.
The knowledgeable restoration of this Baglio has essentially preserved its original character, and has even enriched it so to present the visitor with a wide range of impressions, especially during the warm summer evenings when its lighting makes it even more suggestive. Immersed in 19 hectares of land, this Borgo is composed of a main body containing an entrance hall that communicates with a large but cosy restaurant lounge, where to savour local dishes which are rigorously prepared with fresh and genuine local products by expert chef "David." In the other buildings are the 12 hotel rooms, of "Classic," Superior" and "Deluxe" standard. All rooms are soberly furnished using primary materials such as stone, wood, iron and glass which have been worked by skilled artisans and which accompany some pieces of furniture as well as designer accessories. The rooms are all very comfortable and are equipped with air-conditioning, satellite TV and a bath with shower or bathtub. One of the two bathrooms is equipped with a Japanese-style bathtub with a cascading water system. Two of the "Superior" rooms can be connected through an interior door.
Many have heard of the beauties of Noto, the baroque pearl of Sicily. Only a few though know that before the eighteenth century town, entirely rebuilt following the 1693 earthquake that completely burned it to the ground, there existed another Noto. Ancient texts describe her as Netum, i.e. ancient Noto. The town was situated on the very mount Alveria, a high ground plane which was inhabited since prehistoric times, as numerous archeological necropoli discovered nearby testify. Mount Alveria is today a site rich with historical-archeological evidence from all periods, when Siculian necropoli coexisted with Hellenistic, Protochristian, Hebrew, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Renaissance and baroque remains. The entire area is today an archeological zone of high historical interest which has become patrimony of the U.N.E.S.C.O.
From the Borgo, you an easily reach all the baroque towns of Noto, Modica, Ragusa Ibla, Ispica, the natural reserve of Pantalica, Cavagrande del Cassibile, Vendicari and the beaches of Cala Mosche, Vendicari, Eloro, Portopalo, Pozzallo.
